David Larsen --
Hi! Here is some information which will help you know something about me.
I grew up on a farm near Salem, Oregon during the 40s and 50s. This is
where I really learned to love the land by helping my family with the farm,
camping out with the fellows and doing lots of hunting and fishing. During
those years I also became interested in electronics and became an Amateur
Radio Operator. After graduating from high school in 1957, I served in
Uncle Sams Navy for 2 years as an electronic technician. This led
me to Oregon State University for a degree in Business and Technology (Electronics).
I spent a few years in the electronic industry as an engineer. The next
30 years I spent as a university teacher in electronic instrumentation
at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA. I retired from teaching in 1998. During
my time at the university I really wanted to be associated with land and
farming. In 1968 I started a small Christmas tree farm. This developed
over the years into a serious operation with hundreds of acres of Christmas
trees. My wife Gaynell and I retired from the tree business in 1993.
During the last few years I have enjoyed working with land by purchasing
and selling my own land. I am not a broker and my wife and I only work
with land we own. It is always a great pleasure to help folks find just
the right piece of land and see how they build on it or use it for pleasure
and business.
My wife Gaynell and I have 5 children, 16 grandchildren and one great
grandson. This keeps us very busy and fills our lives with great joy. For
the past 50 years I have maintained my interest in electronics and amateur
radio. Gaynell and I founded a non-profit Foundation in 1992 to use amateur
radio to promote international goodwill. This work has provided travel
to dozens of countries. We continue to work with folks in many countries
helping develop emergency radio communication systems. It is a real pleasure
to give some of ourselves back assisting others. If you would like to see
some of the work we do with the Foundation For Amateur International Radio
Service (FAIRS) see our web site http://www.fairs.org
Gaynell and I are the Directors of the Foundation.
We really enjoy the country life here in Floyd County VA. Many mornings
we are in the Town of Floyd (which has just 500 people) for breakfast at
the Blue Ridge Restaurant. Please come by one day and join us.
